You can shop for anything from the comfort of your own home these days, and that includes used cars. Craigslist is a great place to find used cars, but you need to take some precautions to avoid getting scammed or making a bad purchase through this website.
There are some things you need to be aware of when buying from Craigslist. First, you’re dealing with a stranger. No matter how personable and friendly that person is and no matter how many times or how long you’ve talked by phone or online, that person is still a stranger. You should only arrange to meet them at a public place and you should always have someone with you. If you arrive at the designated meeting place and you feel at all uncomfortable, stay in your car and drive away. Your safety is more important than any car deal.
Also, never give the seller personal information about yourself. All they need is a first name and either a cell number or an email address to commit some types of identity theft. Don’t tell them where you work, where you live or what your last name is. Again, you’re dealing with a stranger and safety counts.
If at any time while you’re communicating with this person you become uncomfortable, end your conversation with them and move on. Don’t worry about being rude and trust your instincts. There are plenty more cars out there, but only one you.
Be especially careful when it comes time to test drive the car. Never go alone. If the seller asks you about paying cash for the car, tell them that you won’t be bringing cash with you, but can get it from your bank the same day if you decide to make the purchase. You can carry the cash if you want, but don’t let the seller know you have it.
Before you test drive the car, make sure it has plenty of gas and talk about the proposed route. If the owner recommends an area that isn’t well populated, walk away. Or, if the car’s fuel gauge is sitting on empty when you arrive, move on and find another deal.
Beyond these specifics, the purchase of a used car using Craigslist is pretty much like the purchase of any used car. Know the value of the car you’re considering and learn all you can about its condition. Find out if the car has been in an accident and whether or not the car has a clean title. Get the VIN and get a CARFAX report if the owner doesn’t have one to offer you. Get the car inspected by a mechanic you know and trust and test drive the car yourself. Research the car on the Internet for any known issues or recalls. Finally, consider the cost of insurance, maintenance and any immediate repairs or upgrades that will be required.
If the car passes these criteria with flying colors, it’s time to negotiate a good price and hopefully, close the great deal you found on Craigslist.
