2009 Mercedes-Benz GL Class

In the past ten years, the market for luxury SUVs has been sewn up by American and Japanese vehicles. Now Mercedes is upping the ante in style, luxury and performance with the introduction of its new GL Class. The GL Class was originally intended to replace the G Class – a boxy, military style vehicle. Instead of going for ostentatious, Mercedes opted to go for sleek and elegant, a welcome change from the more-more-more mentality that seems to infect most luxury SUV manufacturers.

Compared to smaller SUVs, the Mercedes Benz GL Class is longer and has more storage area behind the rear seat. While overall vehicle length is about the same as other vehicles in the class, the wheelbase is longer and the dimensions are more elegant. Instead of using a heavy duty, but sometimes clunky truck-based frame, the GL class uses a car-like unibody, which provides maximum comfort and agility on the road.

There are three different GL Class cars – the GL320 CDI, the GL450 and the GL550. The first two have virtually the same equipment, although the engines are different. The GL550 has the most powerful engine in the class, as well as most of the optional features that can be found on the other models. Interestingly enough, purchasing a GL320 may also entitle you to an additional tax credit – talk to your dealer to find out for sure.

The GL Class’ cargo area is roomy and can handle up to seven passengers in style. The GL Class is designed to perform well in all types of weather, and heated front seats and dual zone climate control make driving more comfortable, whatever the weather. A power folding third row seat is standard, along with a full complement of air bags and safety equipment. Options include parking assist, surround sound audio, a navigation system, sunroof, a rear seat entertainment system and adaptive cruise control. Just like every Mercedes, the GL class features stability control and anti-lock brakes with brake assist and an integrated roll-over sensor.

Next up, the engine of the GL450 is a powerful, 335 horsepower, 4.7 liter, V8. The GL550 engine is a 382 horsepower, 5.5 liter V8. Still, the most interesting engine is in the GL320 CDL, a 3.2 liter turbodiesel V6, which boasts better mpg than its gasoline counterparts. Currently, it’s not available in California or California-emissions states, but should be considered in all other states.

Finally, all models in the Mercedes-Benz GL Class have a standard seven speed automatic transmission, air adjustable suspension and an all wheel drive system. If you plan to go off road with your SUV, look at the GL450, which has an optional Off Road Package with a 4WD system.

The Mercedes-Benz GL Class handles better than most vehicles of its size. If you’re in the market for a luxury SUV, be sure to consider this new entry into the field. The cost may be a little higher than other options on the market, but you’ll find it well worth the cost when it comes to the GL Class’ features and performance.
